Hobby Airport has had a long and storied history. The airport was established in 1937 as Houston Municipal Airport. It was briefly named Howard Hughes Airport, after the famous but eccentric engineer, filmmaker and aviator. International service started at Hobby in 1948. With the opening of George Bush International Airport, Hobby was actually shut down for a couple of years. Today Hobby has two concourses (with a third under construction), 30 gates, and served 15M+ passengers in 2024. Come take a walk down memory lane as one of our senior docents tells the story of Hobby Airport.
